DVAA Revisited

DVAA Revisited - Historical display

Thursday 7th - 29th November 2013
The City of Darwin Community Art Space in the Darwin Civic Centre was transformed into a trip down memory lane with a collection of images and invitations spanning our 30 year history at Frog Hollow. We have trawled the archives and members’ photo albums to bring together a collection of memories to share in this display.
Just a few of the images from the display.

Art Stories - collaboration with Corrugated Iron Youth Arts & Supported by NT Writers Centre

Casuarina Library all November
DVAA have collected different images from local artists, and through their connection with local schools Corrugated Iron Youth Arts facilitated writing projects encouraging students to write a story, or a response to the art works. The stories and images were on display throughout November 2013 in the Casuarina Library, with free postcards produced of the art works detailing a link to the stories on the internet. NT Writers Centre also supports this project. Postcards will be available at all DVAA anniversary events.

Storm 2 by Yvette Martin

Storm 2 by Yvette Martin

Storm 2
Once upon a time a 12 year old called Jill decided to walk along the beach to go for a swim. The water was
crashing against the rocks, the beach smelt like sea water creating waves on the shore, all she could hear were
seagulls calling for hot chips and families having fun. It tasted like sand and as if it were the flavor of salt and it
felt like there were crushed mountains between Jill’s toes.
When all of a sudden a tsunami ripped through the beach tearing the sand from beneath and pulling people
and belongings into the ocean, the next thing she knew was that she was floating with the reef of the ocean. All
that was around her was dark blue crystal clear waters, and she had been washed away so far that there was
nothing but a life tube around her.
Then she thought of something………… Jill thought that if she swam to get the life tube she could start to
make her way back to her home town. Jill didn’t realise how long the journey would be but she didn’t care. So
she started traveling back quickly but carefully.
She finally arrived home and everyone was glad to see her and so glad that the town celebrated by having a
PARTY. When Jill got back she was hurt, and beaten up. She went to bed at night and woke up to find her bed
drifting in the ocean.

Thunder storm
The sky was frowning at Scarlet, like a friend frowning at another friend. The chemistry between the friends
electrocuted the sky. Making the clouds start to become darker, and gray. Scarlet had been thinking about the
fight she had with her friend today at school. She was looking outside the window, her thoughts lighting up the
sky. She felt like she was sitting in the audience at the entertainment center. And the sky was the stage, making
a performance of a lifetime. She remembered the mean word her friend said to her. And the sky automatically
went black.
Scarlet remembered the actions her friend had done. These actions would separate their friendship forever.
Suddenly the black clouds started pouring with rain, so did Scarlet’s eyes. The rain came down faster and faster,
harder and harder the rain became. Scarlet closed her eyes title. Terrifying thoughts flowing through her mind.
Pictures flashing throw her memory. KRAK! Scarlet opened her eyes. KRAK! This time she heard the sound
and saw it. An extremely quick flash of lite completely lighting up the sky. The flashes of light stung her eyes.
She closed her eyes again, her friend’s voice echoing throughout her body. Making her heart skip a beat. She
opened her eyes. They were sore and stinging from the tears.
The lightening had stopped, the rain was no longer pouring, and it was little spitting. Scarlet breathed a sigh of
relief. She felt the slightest bit of happiness tickle through her body, electrocuting her brain to give her only
good thoughts. It had stopped raining. The clouds were gray again. And then as she looked up she saw the
slightest glisten of sunshine shine through the clouds. The storm was over the sun and was coming out again.
’Wow ‘’ said Scarlet excitedly. She stood up and moved her face closer to the window.
That’s amazing Scarlet thought. She was looking at a beautiful bright rainbow. Lighting up the sky with every
colour. Scarlet thought it was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen nature do. The rainbow contained
theses colours red, yellow, pink, blue, purple, orange and green. Every colour had its own unique glow. Just then
Scarlet, realised that nature the sky had felt all her feelings and showed them to her. Trying to tell her that it’s
ok. Scarlet had no presence, the sky was her guide.

Elephants Could Perform On These by Tim Growcott

Friends
The life at the circus, a bright entertainment place, lay a girl, a miserable one. She had no place, no family
or name. But one nice friend named L.E. This L.E wasn’t a human. L.E was creature. A creature with a lot of
memory to remember her friend. This is where the story began.
L.E sprayed water everywhere, and started to practise balancing on one box. The girl didn’t know what the
box was. The girl started placing them, block by block. The tall boxes ended up being a tall tower. The tall tower
started to crumble, and then tumbled over the girl. L.E rushed as quickly as her legs could carry her. When she
reached the ruined tower, L.E tossed over box by box, but couldn’t find the girl. L.E was frightened.
Then, in the corner of her eye, L.E saw a hand. L.E tossed the box over and there was the girl. The one that
had no place, no family or name. The miserable one. L.E’s long nose tickled the girl. The tickle feeling didn’t
seem to work. L.E’s eyes started to water. It looked like a water fall falling onto the land. As fast as lightning, L.E
saw something. (A box was knocked over.)

Return To Nature through Beer Cans by Sarah Pirrie

Return To Nature through Beer Cans by Sarah Pirrie

Return To Nature Through Beer Cans
The bright yellow sun was hot, and the fresh blue water was cold. It was a hot summer afternoon down at
the beach. The waves came up onto the beach and washed up all the shells. I was in the middle of the summer
holiday. I went down to Queensland with my family. We were staying in a beautiful hut by the beach. My parents
were inside having a cup of tea, my older brother was visiting some of his old friends, and my dog had gone for
a walk.
I was building sand castles and decorating them with beautiful white pearly shells. Suddenly a beer can washed
up onto the shore. This beer can had bits of coral grown on it. I had never seen anything like it. I picked it up. I
started taking it to my parents. The coral suddenly turned into a beautiful purple rock with a heart carved in it.
Then just as I was about to open the front door, the rock turned back into coral.
I ran into my bedroom. I spent one hour trying to find out how to change it to a rock and back again. A whole
night went by. In the morning I was thinking about the purple rock when the coral changed into its rock form.
Later on I realized that it changed form depending on what object I was thinking about.

Thales Touch by Sarah Pirrie

Thales Touch
The sky was clear and beautiful; the clouds performed and made shapes that were seen from the ground. The
trees swayed, following the direction of the wind which was whistling throughout the grass making it looked
bent but still alive. The sun shone out like a yellow diamond leaving everything in its sight glistening, this sight
was truly something to behold, but there, standing in the middle of this beautiful view was a shop. And that’s
where our story begins.
Lavender was a sweet girl that was loved by everyone, everywhere. She had eyes that were hazel brown, hair
as dark as midnight and skin as white as snow. She was also kind.
One sunny day, Lavender went out for a walk. As she walked, she smiled at herself, for the view around her was
magnificent. “Nature is a wonderful present!” she announced. She kept walking and gawking around her, as she
walked the lane started to go narrower and narrower. At last, the lane stopped and there before her was the
shop!
Lavender got nearer and nearer and before she knew it, she was standing in front of the door. Lavender was
also a curious girl so she quietly opened the door. Inside was pitch black but there was a small distant light that
stood in the middle of the shop.
Lavender got more curious so she drew closer and closer. The light was shining on a piece of picture; Lavender
looked more closely and gasped! The picture was of used, collected bottles from Mangrove and paper ‘flow’.
Lavender was so entranced by this beautiful picture that she didn’t notice everything around her. The name
read ‘Thales Touch’.
After a few hours, Lavender looked at her watch and gasped, because it was already midnight! Lavender fled
home and kept coming back every day to stare at the picture and create amazing stories and images in her
mind.

The Crisis
Screams came from all corners of the country people ran in all directions, doing anything to get away from the
horror.
In the small town of Texas there was a boy who was doing his homework. His name was Andrew; he was a
smart kid who very soon was destined to put an end to 50 years of needless stealing. One day as he was
writing an essay, a letter appeared on his desk by magic. Very slowly he opened the envelope and read . . .
Half an hour later, he was on board a plane that was headed to New York, the city of crisis. The letter had
said to go to New York and meet an old friend on an empty lane at midnight, who would give him the full
cheese on his mission. Of course, Andrew was spellbound at the thought of participating in a real-life deathdefying
action sequence. Precisely at midnight the old friend met him on an empty lane, his name was Beck but
everyone called him B. “Hello Andrew,” said B “we’ve been waiting for you”. “Oh, umm, hi B,” replied Andrew
nervously. “No need to be afraid Andrew, I’m just here to explain a few things to you about the crisis,” said B
airily.”I do know what the crisis is, it happens every year,” said Andrew. B nodded signaling him to explain.”Well,
it’s when the leader of the goes into dept and has to borrow money from other states or cities,” explained
Andrew. “You are absolutely correct, but you failed to mention one important detail,” said B. “I have, what is
it?”asked Andrew. “Well then, allow me to fill you in,” replied B mysteriously.
Ten minutes later. Andrew was sneaking up behind a tree that had names carved into it. Those names were the
wealthy people who owed the leader money. Just at that exact moment it all happened. Andrew pulled out a
gun and shot a masked figure until he was dead. After that he knelt down beside the tree and sawed it off until
it was just a stump. All the screams stopped and the city was saved.

Progress
The sun was shining, birds were flying and life began. Elouise started her daily routine with getting out of
bed…….which would take a while. Then she gets dressed. Eloise hated getting dressed because between you
and me when she was little her mum would dress her in the tightest uniform you have ever seen. Next she
would go down stairs and get a bowl of cereal with a silver plated spoon.
On this day, Elouise dropped her favourite silver plated spoon under the fridge. The fridge that has been there
for centuries and centuries. She had never looked under the dark, old, black painted fridge.
Well it was her spoon that she loved. She started to reach under the fridge and quickly pulled out her hand.
She questioned herself but she knew she had to do it. Again she reached her nice, clean hand under the dirty
fridge but she could not get it.
Then she decided to look under the fridge and what she saw next surprised her. It was a world of cleaning
stuff. Bottles, lights and other things. Cob webs hung everywhere. It was amazing. What was she going to do?
